The Benefits of Putting Nitrogen in your Tires

The idea of using nitrogen instead of oxygen to fill tires has been around for a while. But not until recently has it been an option for the average consumer. Although it sounds like a pricey accessory suited for car enthusiasts, it is actually an economical, and ecological necessity. To make a long, complex scientific explanation short, nitrogen maintains proper tire pressure longer because it takes longer to leak out of the tire.

Proper tire pressure is a big deal. Maintain it with nitrogen, and you'll see these three primary benefits:
  • Increased Fuel Efficiency - Correct tire pressure keeps the manufacturer's recommended "contact patch" on the road. This lessens the rolling resistance and maximizes fuel efficiency.
  • Longer Tire Life - When it comes in contact with other materials, oxygen causes oxidation. Oxidation can make rubber brittle and cause it to lose tensile strength. In addition, at high temperatures and pressures, oxygen reacts and damages inner tire liners and belt packages; nitrogen does not.
  • Increased Safety - Under-inflated tires cause 90% of blowouts. Nitrogen provides more reliable pressure for reduced blowout potential.
The cost for all these added benefits isn't much more than inflating your tires with regular air. The average cost to fill a tire with Nitrogen can vary widely, anywhere from $3-10 per tire, depending on several variables such as tire size, tire pressure, and if the dealer chooses to bundle any other services with the nitrogen fill. This cost usually includes top-offs for as long as you own the tires. Some retailers don't charge anything if you purchase tires from them.

Nitrogen has gained popularity when it comes to tire inflation. Nitrogen runs cooler, does not leak through rubber as quickly and does not cause rust to form over times on steel cords or wheels.
